Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is the focus of this novel study for students with autism and special learning needs. Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought, there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!! This novel study on Romeo and Juliet is designed for students who have disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL STUDY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PLAY OR AN ABRIDGED VERSION.  YOU WILL NEED YOUR OWN COPY OF THE PLAY TO READ ALOUD.

THIS NOVEL STUDY WILL WORK WITH ANY ADAPTED VERSION YOU MAY HAVE. (see suggestions below)

This unit has 32 activities to accompany the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The activities were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this play read aloud. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on the story. This repetition encourages deeper engagement in the book.

Finally, many of the activities in the Romeo and Juliet novel study include more than one version, differentiation suggestions, and presentation options. There are 1-2 activities (32 different activities!!) to go with each scene as your students stay engaged while you read the play aloud.

There are 2 complete files to go with this unit. One is in color and one is in BW.

***There are also comprehension questions included in this unit. There are 5 multiple choice questions for each scene with 3 picture answer choices.

I do not expect any of you will read the actual unabridged play.

Luckily, this novel unit will work with any adapted or abridged version you may have. Here is what you can do.

  • There are 32 activities included in this novel study. You should have no problem finding an activity that will align with the scene you have read aloud from your adapted version. Remember, the activities are not comprehension based but are more extensions of something that happened or was mentioned in that scene. Therefore, they will work with other versions of the play.

  • The comprehension questions ARE based on each scene. But, they are very general and should still work if your adapted version is broken into acts and scenes.

There are so many benefits to reading out loud to your students. You will teach them an invaluable skill of learning to sit still while someone else is talking. Your parents will also LOVE you for not only teaching them this skill of sitting but also for exposing them to age-appropriate material. Plus, you never know which students you will touch with each story you read.
