Reading Strategies to Improve Comprehension Special Education Curriculum Bundle

This special education ELA Curriculum has reading strategies to improve comprehension. It has 7 units using extended state standards for students in a special education setting.

The materials are designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in the activities through cut-and-paste worksheets or digitally through Google Slides.

Students have many opportunities to practice these skills in a scaffolded manner, working first with pictures and then with text.

• Making Predictions
• Making Inferences

Each unit includes:

• Lesson plan
• PowerPoint that covers how to use that reading strategy
• Voice-recorded PowerPoint
• Movie version of the book to use in a Google slide
• Vocabulary board
• Group activities
• Sorting or matching activities
• Activities working with pictures
• Activities working with text/short passages
• Quiz
• Digital versions of the activities in the form of Google slides

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated in these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to assimilate what is being taught. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, we can ask students questions that will push them to think more deeply than before.
