Financial Literacy Curriculum for Special Education Budgeting Employment

This Financial Literacy Curriculum contains 6 units specifically designed for students with special learning needs, especially autism who are in high school and beyond.

It includes:

• Employment (3 weeks)
• Budgeting Skills (3 weeks)
• Saving Money (3 weeks)
• Borrowing Money and Credit Cards (3 weeks)
• Home and Auto Insurance (2 weeks)
• Health Insurance (3 weeks)

These financial planning units address how to plan for the future, manage money, find a job, and protect yourself in a simplified but rigorous way for students with diverse learning needs to make meaningful and authentic connections to the material.

With 17 weeks of instruction, there are many opportunities for students to engage in activities about financial planning. This repetition encourages a true understanding of this very abstract concept.

In addition, many of these financial planning activities and assessments include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation.

⭐These units were built using the brand new standards for financial literacy in Ohio that are required for graduation.

This Financial Literacy Curriculum includes print and digital versions of the activities. There is a set of google slides for each unit that include a differentiated set of slides. There is a movie version of the book included as well.

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated into these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to fully assimilate what is being taught. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students be able to pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, if we can ask students good questions it will push them to think more deeply than before.
