Anne Frank The Diary of a Young Girl Novel Study for Special Education

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is the focus of this novel study for students with autism and special learning needs. Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought, there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!! This novel study on The Diary of a Young Girl is designed for students who have disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL STUDY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE NOVEL.  YOU WILL NEED YOUR OWN COPY OF THE NOVEL TO READ ALOUD.  I USED THE UNABRIDGED VERSION, BUT THE ACTIVITIES WILL WORK WITH ANY ADAPTED VERSION YOU MAY HAVE. (see suggestions below)

This unit has 66 activities to accompany the novel The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. The activities were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this novel read aloud. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on the story. This repetition encourages deeper engagement in the book.

Finally, many activities in The Diary of a Young Girl novel study include more than one version, differentiation suggestions, and presentation options. There are 1-2 activities (66 different activities!!) to go with every 10-20 pages as your students stay engaged while you read the novel aloud.

• One set has 5 multiple choice questions for every 10-20 pages (dates noted) with 3 picture answer choices.
• One set has 20 general questions with 3 picture answer choices which are perfect if you use an adapted version.

This novel unit was put together using the definitive version version of the book. The ISBN is 978-0-141-03200-9 published by Penguin Books. I realize that you may not read this version aloud to your students and may use an adapted version. Here is what you can do.

• There are 66 activities included in this novel study. You should have no problem finding an activity that will align with the chapter you have read aloud from your adapted version. Remember, the activities are not comprehension based but are more extensions of something that happened or was mentioned in that chapter. Therefore, they will work with other versions of the book.
• The comprehension questions ARE chapter based and may NOT correspond to the version you are using.
• I have also included 20 summary questions you can use with an adapted version. These are very general and should be covered in most versions.
