The Red Badge of Courage Novel Study Special Education Activities & Questions

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is the focus of this novel study for students with autism and special learning needs.

 

Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!!

 

This novel study on The Red Badge of Courage is designed for students who have disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level.

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL STUDY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE NOVEL.  YOU WILL NEED YOUR OWN COPY OF THE NOVEL TO READ ALOUD.  I USED THE UNABRIDGED VERSION, BUT THE ACTIVITIES WILL WORK WITH ANY ADAPTED VERSION YOU MAY HAVE. (see suggestions below)

 

This unit has 35 activities accompanying the novel The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane.

 

The activities were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this novel read aloud. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on the story. This repetition encourages deeper engagement in the book.

 

Finally, many of the activities in The Red Badge of Courage novel study include more than one version, differentiation suggestions, and presentation options. There are 1-2 activities (35 different activities!!) to go with each chapter as your students stay engaged while you read the novel aloud.

 

There are 2 complete files to go with this unit. One is in color and one is in BW.

• 15 overview questions you can use with an adapted version

This novel unit was put together using the unabridged version of the book.I realize many of you will read an adapted version. Here is what you can do.

 

• There are 35 activities included in this novel study. You should have no problem finding an activity that will align with the chapter you have read aloud from your adapted version. Remember, the activities are not comprehension based but are more extensions of something that happened or was mentioned in that chapter. Therefore, they will work with other versions of the book.

 

• There are 15 overview questions covering the main events in the story, which should also be included in any adapted version. Use these questions.
