The Miracle Worker Novel Study for Special Education with Questions Helen Keller

The Miracle Worker by William Gibson is the focus of this novel study for students with autism and special learning needs.

Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought, there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!! This novel study on The Miracle Worker is designed for students with disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL STUDY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE NOVEL.  YOU WILL NEED YOUR OWN COPY OF THE NOVEL TO READ ALOUD.  I USED THE UNABRIDGED VERSION, BUT THE ACTIVITIES WILL WORK WITH ANY ADAPTED VERSION YOU MAY HAVE. (see suggestions below)

This unit has 16 activities accompanying the play The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. The activities were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this novel read aloud. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on the story. This repetition encourages deeper engagement in the book.

Finally, many of The Miracle Worker novel study activities include more than one version, differentiation suggestions, and presentation options. There are 5 activities (16 different activities!!) to go with each act as your students stay engaged while you read the novel aloud.

There are 2 complete files to accompany this unit. One is in color, and one is in black and white.

***This unit also includes comprehension questions. Each act has 15-20 multiple-choice questions, with 3 picture answer choices.

This novel unit was put together using the unabridged version of the play. I realize that you will not likely read this version aloud to your students and may use an adapted version. Here is what you can do.

• There are 16 activities included in this novel study. You should have no problem finding an activity that will align with the act you have read aloud from your adapted version. Remember, the activities are not comprehension based but are more extensions of something that happened or was mentioned in that act. Therefore, they will work with other versions of the book.

• The comprehension questions ARE comprehension-based and may not correspond to the version you are using. I keep the questions very basic and related to specific things that happen in that act. Therefore, you likely will not be able to use the questions for an adapted version.
