Rules by Cynthia Lord is the focus of this novel unit for students with autism and special learning needs. Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought, there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!! This 215 page unit on the novel Rules is designed for students who have significant disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level. The lesson of learning to sit while someone is talking is an invaluable skill that is worthwhile teaching.
 
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL UNIT IS FOR STUDENTS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES AND ARE EITHER EMERGING OR NON-READERS
 
This unit has various activities to accompany Lord’s book, Rules. The materials were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this novel. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on what it is like to have a brother and friend with a disability. This repetition encourages deeper engagement of the book. Finally, many of the activities include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation. There are one or more activities to go with every chapter (30 different activities!!) to keep your students engaged while you read this novel aloud.
 
*****This unit now has comprehension questions. There are 5 multiple choice questions with 3 picture answer choices for each chapter. An answer key is included.
 
I have also started creating TWO SEPARATE FILES. One is completely in color and one is completely in black and white rather than combined together in one unit. This was a suggestion from a buyer, and I thought if it makes someone’s life easier, then I am all in! So, I hope you find this format easier to use and more printer friendly. Even though there are more pages, the price has not increased.
