Decimals on a Number Line for Special Education with digital activities

Decimals can be a very challenging subject for students with special learning needs, especially autism, to grasp.

This 2 week unit helps students understand decimals have a specific value and can be placed on a number line.

Includes scaffolded activities: (to the tenth place)

• Identify the parts (whole and part) of a decimal
• Draw decimals
• Place decimals on a number line that includes a picture representation of the decimal
• Place decimals on a number line

This decimal unit was specifically designed for students with special learning needs, especially autism.

There are lots of opportunities for students to practice understanding the value of decimals to the tenth place.

This repetition encourages a true understanding of decimals as numbers with a real quantitative value and builds strong number sense.

Finally, many of the decimal activities include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation.

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated in these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to fully assimilate what is being taught. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students be able to pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, if we can ask students good questions it will push them to think more deeply than before.
