Description

A House is a House for Me by Mary Ann Hoberman is the focus of this literacy 56 page unit developed for students with autism and other special learning needs. This unit has various activities to accompany Hoberman’s book, A House is a House for Me. The materials are designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through reading A House is a House for Me. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on all the different types of houses that animals, people and even things live in. This repetition encourages deeper engagement of the book. Finally, many of the A House is a House for Me activities include suggestions for simple differentiation and options for presentation. There are also 2 social stories on Where I Live which goes perfectly with this story and is great for students with autism and special learning needs.

***See Preview for a detailed look at this unit.***

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated in these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to fully assimilate what is being taught. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students be able to pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, we can ask students questions that will push them to think more deeply than before.

♥As always please take a moment to leave feedback or post any questions you may have. Remember, you will gain credit toward future purchase on tpt as you leave more and more feedback!!

♥I am currently developing more units, and any feedback I get helps me make improvements in the future.

Note: This unit utilizes Smarty Symbols and NOT Boardmaker Symbols.

Oh boy, when you are just starting out and have yo Oh boy, when you are just starting out and have your own classroom for the first time it is hard to know where to focus your attention. There is SO MUCH to implement and regulations to follow that it can feel completely overwhelming. It can be almost paralyzing. . But, I found if I could just pick one thing I knew I wanted to implement EVERY SINGLE DAY and focus on that for a bit, it really made the rest of the day go so much smoother. . I have found the same to be true in my personal life, caring for my adult son who has autism and other issues. Consistency has been so necessary. . But we cannot be consistent with EVERYTHING, so picking that one activity or time of the day to start with is key. Read more about how to do that, and what a huge difference this small commitment can make in how your classroom runs. https://specialneedsforspecialkids.org/2021/03/29/why-consistency-is-key-in-a-special-education-classroom/ #specialneedsforspecialkids #classroommanagement #consistencyiskey

Please don't think just because you teach in a spe Please don't think just because you teach in a special education setting your student cannot enjoy and participate in activities built around a novel. I PROMISE your students can do these activities (even if they don't understand the entire story.) . If you have more advanced students, then you may want to actually assess how well they understand what you just read. For that reason, I just added comprehension questions to this novel unit!! It is one of my most popular ones, so I know there are a lot of you out there who have been waiting patiently for me to get to it. . There are 5 questions for each chapter. It still has 32 activities as well (one or more for each chapter!!). Redownload or check out this childhood favorite!!
