Subtract One: Early Math Unit for Special Education

Total Pages: 18
File Size: 515 KB

Subtraction Unit contains almost 20 pages of material specifically designed for students with special learning needs, especially autism. This unit on early subtraction addresses subtracting one from a set in a simplified but rigorous way for students with diverse learning needs to make meaningful and authentic connections to the material. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information on subtraction. This repetition encourages true understanding of how set size changes when subtracting one. Finally, many of the subtraction activities include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation and options for presentation.

This subtraction book and subtraction worksheet set was created as a companion to the Number Worlds curriculum. I have a similar unit on adding one. See the link below.

See Preview for a detailed look at the contents.
Subtraction Unit includes:
• 13 page subtracting one book with colorful images to support text
• 5 subtraction worksheets

My students LOVED this subtraction book and wanted me to read it over and over again. The subtraction worksheets were an easy way for them to connect symbolic numbers to picture quantities. This gives them a deeper understanding of quantity and the function of subtraction.
