Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman is the focus of this literacy unit for students with autism and special learning needs. This book was the Caldecott Medal Winner in 1996. This 31 page unit on Officer Buckle and Gloria is designed for students who have significant disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading to my students, regardless of their learning level. The lesson of learning to sit while someone is talking is an invaluable skill that is worthwhile teaching.
This is a story about a police officer who makes lots of safety rules, but it is his sidekick, Gloria, who makes the kids sit up and listen.
****There are digital versions of the activities included. There are 16 google slides including a differentiated set and a movie of the book read aloud. SEE THE VIDEO PREVIEW FOR A WALK-THROUGH OF THE SLIDES.
See preview for the table of contents and a detailed look at what is included.

There are so many benefits to reading out loud to your students. You will teach them an invaluable skill of learning to sit still while someone else is talking. Your parents will also LOVE you for not only teaching them this skill of sitting but also for exposing them to age-appropriate material. Plus, you never know which students you will touch with each story you read.
