Max: Best Friend, Hero, Marine by Jennifer Shotz is the focus of this novel unit for students with autism and special learning needs. It is a great way to introduce poetry to your students!! Have you ever wanted to read a novel to your special education students but thought, there is no way they will sit and listen? Persevere, it is worth it!! This 250 page unit on the novel Max: Best Friend, Hero, Marine is designed for students who have significant disabilities and special learning needs. I was always reading a novel to my students, regardless of their learning level. The lesson of learning to sit while someone is talking is an invaluable skill that is worthwhile teaching.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NOVEL UNIT IS FOR STUDENTS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES AND ARE EITHER EMERGING OR NON-READERS

This unit has various activities to accompany Shotz’s book, Max: Best Friend, Hero, Marine. The materials were designed to allow students with multiple levels of learning to access and engage in lessons learned through listening to this novel. There are many opportunities for students to engage in repeated information about this amazing story about a boy and his military dog. This repetition encourages deeper engagement of the book. Finally, many of the activities include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation. There is an activity (33 different activities!!) to go with each chapter in the book as your students stay engaged while you read this novel aloud.

I have started adding an option to use when you want students to have to choose between correct and incorrect answers in some of the activities. I am still including an errorless version as well. Hopefully, this will address even more learning levels in your class!

*****I have added comprehension questions to this novel unit. There are now 5 multiple choice questions for each chapter with 3 picture choices. An answer key is included.

I have also started creating TWO SEPARATE FILES. One is completely in color and one is completely in black and white rather than combined together in one unit. This was a suggestion from a buyer, and I thought if it makes someone’s life easier, then I am all in! So, I hope you find this format easier to use and more printer friendly. Even though there are more pages, the price has not increased.

There are so many benefits to reading out loud to your students. You will teach them an invaluable skill of learning to sit still while someone else is talking. Your parents will also LOVE you for not only teaching them this skill of sitting, but also for exposing them to age appropriate material. Plus, you never know which students you will touch with each story you read.

As always please take a moment to leave feedback or post any questions you may have.

I am currently developing more units, and any feedback I get helps me make improvements in the future.
